Higher or Lower

Two fonts set the same word at the same size. One question: which one measures higher? The values are real, read from the font files, the same numbers behind the font anatomy measurements. One wrong call ends the run.

How the numbers are read

Cap height, x-height and ascender height are three of the five lines every font is drawn between, covered in Font anatomy, measured and the font metrics hub. Each is expressed here as a share of the font's em, so fonts built on different unit grids compare fairly. The fourth measurement, aperture, is not a line but a gap: how open the c and e stay, measured as the narrowest opening in those letters as a share of their height, the subject ofthe easiest fonts to read, measured. Its rounds set the word "access" so the letters in question are on the table. The fonts in the deck are 23 common open fonts, subset to the game's two words and served from this page; nothing leaves your browser.
