The story90s Fonts: the freeware designers who gave them awayBefore fonts were a business, they were a hobby with a zip file. The story of the 1990s freeware font scene — Larabie, Rakowski, Curtis, Klein, Steffmann — and the one-woman archive that kept it online.Read the full story →

About

One of the most prolific freeware type designers of the early web. Meade releases his freeware under the GemFonts label (GemFonts98 in the early 2000s) and sells commercial work through Typotheticals, the foundry he established in 2002. He was also a major contributor to Toronto's Apostrophic Labs collective.

His FontSpace catalog runs to hundreds of families — blackletter, display, and novelty faces alongside text serifs — with millions of downloads.
